Overview

HassBoard is a macOS menu bar application that connects to your self-hosted Home Assistant instance. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what data the app handles and how it is stored.

Diagnostics & Analytics

To fix crashes and understand which features are used, HassBoard includes two Google Firebase services. This is the only information that ever leaves your Mac for anyone other than the Home Assistant server you configure:

Crash & diagnostic reports (Firebase Crashlytics) — when the app crashes or hits an error, a report containing a stack trace and basic device information (such as macOS version, device model, and app version) is sent to Firebase. These reports are not linked to your identity and contain no Home Assistant data.
Usage analytics (Firebase Analytics) — HassBoard records app usage events — such as app launches, screen views, adding, switching, or removing a server (counts only), connection success or failure, and in-app purchase events — along with a few app-level properties: the number of servers you have configured, whether you bought the premium upgrade, and your device language and region. These events are tied to a random Firebase installation identifier, not to your name, Apple ID, or Home Assistant account.

HassBoard never collects or transmits:

Your Home Assistant URL, long-lived access token, or login credentials
The content of your Home Assistant entities, sensors, cameras, or dashboards
Any advertising identifier — the app shows no ads and performs no cross-app tracking

The diagnostic and usage data above is processed by Google as described in the Firebase Privacy and Security documentation; it is never sold or shared with data brokers.

Data Stored on Your Device

The following is stored only on your device and is never transmitted off your Mac:

Configuration — your sensor, alert, camera, and card settings are saved locally in ~/Library/Application Support/HassBoard/configuration.json.
Authentication token — your Home Assistant long-lived access token is stored in the macOS Keychain, protected by the operating system. It is never written to disk in plain text and is never included in configuration exports.
Preferences — minimal UI state (e.g., last selected page) is kept in standard macOS User Defaults.

Network Communication

HassBoard connects to two kinds of destination:

Your Home Assistant server — all entity, sensor, and camera requests go directly from your Mac to the Home Assistant URL you provide, with no intermediary servers or proxies.
Google Firebase — solely to deliver the crash and usage data described above.

Children's Privacy

HassBoard is not directed at children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy is updated, the revised version will be posted at this same URL with an updated date.
